Study in embodied translation: Experimental translations for the Spanish poet Sara Torres
commissioned for Spain NOW!
"In attempting a move toward visual translation, I worked with what the eye might interpret in the space or moment prior to my connection to Spanish, a language I speak almost -but not quite- fluently. Focusing on the sense of space on the page, drawing around and into her texts, the gaps come as doors into the poem, phrases or sounds that first pull me in and form my initial sensory or emotional understandings. Only the areas of the text that were present with me in that first moment are retained, and the rest removed
mazes . containers . blueprints."
